The first time I visited Paris, I stayed in a little hotel in Bastille. It is still one of my favorite neighborhoods to walk around. It's a little grimy, a little touristy, crazy as hell at 3 in the morning, and a great place to get some traditional bistro cooking.
The Opera House is shockingly modern, at odds with the rest of the rather traditional Paris feel to the neighborhood.
